Several days post the powerful storm pummelled into western Jamaica with unprecedented strength, locals in affected areas by the shoreline are still desperately waiting for assistance.

Many of the roads are clogged with rubble and communities are stranded with limited provisions, lacking utilities, and no idea of when normalcy will return.

Rising Death Toll

Authorities confirmed on the weekend that no fewer than 28 individuals in Jamaica have perished after the storm struck as a devastating Category 5 hurricane with 185 mph (297km/h) sustained winds.

This marks approximately half again as many in the casualty count recently, and figures may increase as authorities make progress into new parts of the island in the next few days.

Regional Impact

This particular parish is believed to have the next largest count of potential fatalities, behind the southeastern parish to the eastern sector. The cyclone's core struck approximately between the two neighbouring parishes. In St Elizabeth an the vast majority of residences have been destroyed.

Path to Restoration

An extensive roadway headed west into this damaged region winds through a graveyard of trees – piles of tree parts, broken and contorted, blanketing the landscape for miles.

Current Obstacles

Residents of Whitehouse, a shoreline settlement and trading area on the edge of Westmoreland Parish, say the delay in receiving help is increasingly difficult.

Human Experiences

In a tiny community adjacent to the coastal town, a local resident leaned on damaged cement. In the background, the settlement he considers home his entire life has been demolished, along with his livelihood.

"Everyone here is ruined," he said. He said the boat house was destroyed and is now "leveled"

"The storm eliminated all possessions," he revealed, including his fishing boat, which he refers to as "completely destroyed"

Regional Fortitude

Residents of these regions are characterized by dignity and endurance, phrases commonly used on community broadcasts and evident in their positive outlook in the challenging situations.

Positioned beneath the remains of a badly damaged building, Roy Perry said he has suffered total deprivation, but "we need to preserve hope and the hope is up still"

"Must continue. Will not surrender," he said.

Farming Consequences

It is the same tone struck by Oreth Jones, located in his transport distributing salvaged crops – the remaining harvest that was spared from the storm.

Regarding his agricultural land, he said: "It's all wrecked. Total ruin resulted" But he promptly continued: "We must express gratitude for survival"

Global Support

Meanwhile, external support is commencing delivery into Jamaica.

American authorities announced that its Disaster Assistance Response Team had reached the island. Nations such as Britain have also committed substantial financial assistance and critical resources.
