The Three Lions Explore for World Cup Camps Amid Fears of Missing Out On First-Choice Base to the Dutch.
England's football governing body has sent officials to the United States this week to evaluate potential training camps for the forthcoming tournament, amidst growing concerns that their first-choice location could be taken by the Holland.
Tournament Draw Complexities Change Preparations
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had earlier cleared an FA proposal for England to be based in Kansas following a pre-tournament training camp in Fort Lauderdale. But, following the recent tournament draw, there are now concerns that the Netherlands, who have their group games in Kansas, will be awarded first refusal on the desired facility at Sporting Kansas City—a high-performance centre operated by US Soccer.
The world governing body assigns training camps according to geography and FIFA rankings if there is a dispute, with the draw possibly pitting the FA in competition with the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's central region.
Exploring Other Options
Given England's group stage matches scheduled to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be exploring alternative locations on the US East Coast. The association started its scouting process for training camps at the start of the year, with Tuchel and technical director John McDermott visiting possible sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
In spite of this advanced preparation, there was always an understanding that the official tournament draw could significantly alter their plans.
Later Round Travel Strategy
The Three Lions have the eighth most arduous group stage schedule in terms of mileage. Topping Group L would set England on track for a last-32 game in Atlanta, followed by possible last-16 tie in Mexico City.
- Major Departure: The FA may decide to move between venues for the knockout stages should England progress, a major departure from its standard protocol of maintaining a fixed tournament base.
- FIFA Encouragement: FIFA is believed to be actively encouraging such a flexible strategy for the vast 2026 tournament.
After the base camp is finalized, the FA will turn its attention to scheduling two warm-up matches in Florida at the start of June.
