The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
