Elena Rybakina secured the largest prize in WTA history by defeating top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in two sets at the tournament.

Rybakina produced a brilliant display to beat four-times Grand Slam winner Sabalenka 6-3 7-6 (7-0) in the host country.

Because both players came through the competition undefeated, the purse on offer was a record-breaking £3.98 million – the biggest prize offering in WTA the sport's history.

The prize money exceeds the £3.74 million Sabalenka earned for claiming the New York major, which was the highest-paying Grand Slam in 2025.

"It's been an fantastic tournament," commented the Kazakh player.

"I honestly didn't expect any result so to win the title was just unbelievable."

Rybakina, who was the world number six, delivered 16 winning shots during a dominant first-set display.

The 2022 Wimbledon winner saved a couple of break points before winning all four points in the sixth game of the set to take the break and served out to seal the first set.

With the second set on serve, Sabalenka saved two break points at four-all to swing the momentum in her favor.

However, after fighting back to disrupt her opponent's flow, Sabalenka let her opponent off the hook by squandering a pair of chances in the following game to level the second set at five-all.

Sabalenka's failure to force a decider impacted her tiebreak performance, with Rybakina winning every point to claim the championship.

This win, her sixth triumph over Sabalenka, means she will move up one spot in the rankings to number five in the world rankings.

A distraught the runner-up appeared to be in tears as she met with her team soon after the match.

"That was not the best performance from me today but Rybakina you were definitely the better player," Sabalenka told the crowd.

"You literally overpowered me on court. I'm happy to see you at your peak. Enjoy this stunning title."
