A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
