Martin Compston are set to reprise their characters in the popular crime series

The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
