Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's response pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Latest Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered remarks following Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the Giants. Payton suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- Wilson joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
- The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
